Lib Dems Continue to Demand Fair Votes

by Sandwell LibDems on 28 August, 2024

Will Labour continue to ignore the calls?

The Liberal Democrats won 72 seats in General Election – our best result for over a century.  Thank you to all our voters and supporters for helping us achieve such a positive result. In Sandwell, Labour won with less than 50% of the vote in all three constituencies: 37% in Tipton and Wednesbury, 42% in West Bromwich, and 48% in Smethwick.

The 2024 General Election result was the least proportional ever. Labour won a landslide victory with only 33% of the vote – 7% fewer votes than Jeremy Corbyn won in 2017. 67% of the electorate did not vote Labour, but they still won by a landslide.

The Liberal Democrats have been in favour of a fair voting system for 102 years. Unfortunately, both the Labour and Conservative parties are wedded to the discredited and undemocratic First Past the Post System. This system makes many votes worthless, making sure that the main two parties are always in power.

With its massive majority, Labour can now introduce a fair voting system, where each vote counts. Under such a system, you could vote for what you actually believe in, knowing that your vote will count.

When Labour refuse to back fair votes, the Lib Dems will be the voice of change in Parliament.
