Liberal Democrat Action in Parliament

by Sandwell LibDems on 16 August, 2024

Liberal Democrat MPs have hit the ground running in Parliament, and Layla Moran and Wendy Chamberlain have put forward Early Day Motions on topics close to our hearts. Layla’s is on the situation in Gaza, and Wendy’s is about justice for WASPI women. (Wendy also has a second motion, on scrapping the 2-child benefit cap.)

Peace in Israel and Gaza

Layla Moran wasted no time in tabling a motion outlining our long-standing position on the situation in Gaza,  again calling for an immediate ceasefire, condemning unacceptable illegal settler violence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and recognition of a viable Palestinian state. It also notes that the only path to regional security is a two-state solution based on 1967 borders with Hamas not in power.

State pension age and 1950s-born women

Wendy Chamberlain’s motion calls for proper compensation for the WASPI women who were misled about their eligibility to the state pension when the pension age was raised. This is an issue that has also been raised by former Pensions Minister, and Great Barr born, Steve Webb.

Child poverty and the two-child benefit cap

Wendy has also tabled this motion calling on the government to lift the two-child benefit cap. Hopefully, this will see a more measured debate than we saw with the SNP’s blatant grandstanding last week. (We called for this in our manifesto and included details o how it could be paid for.)
