First of all, thank you to everyone who voted in the local election, in May. We will continue to update you on our campaigns and efforts to hold Sandwell Council to account.
Here is a quick introduction to our three candidates in constituencies being run by Sandwell, Mark Rochell, Parmjit Singh Gill, and Oliver Patrick. We will be publish more detailed information about each of them later, and we feel they are a good experienced team.
Parmjit works for the University of Leicester and has been a Liberal Democrat for some 25 years. He has close connections in Sandwell and Birmingham, and has been an MP and has experience of representing local residents in Parliament.
In 2004, he beat Labour in the historic Leicester South by-election, becoming the Lib Dems’ first Member of Parliament of colour. The by-election was considered a referendum on Labour’s illegal war in Iraq, which was opposed by the Lib Dems, a position that has since been vindicated.
Mark was born and raised in Tipton, attending Tipton Green Juniors and Alexandra High School before becoming the first in his family to attend University, studying Business Accounting at Glamorgan. Following University he moved to London where he carved out a successful career in media finance, rising to become the Finance Director of the company that produces the Great British Bake Off. It was whilst in London that Mark first became involved in politics, joining the Lib Dems in 2017 and campaigning in local and national elections.
Mark says “It really is an honour to be able to represent the Lib Dems in my hometown, I fully understand just how much the people of Tipton and Wednesbury deserve a Fair Deal‘.
Oliver is originally from Hampshire, before going onto become a teacher after leaving university. He was then a Head of Department at a small rural school for nearly a decade before he left teaching to focus on serving as an elected councillor in Local Government.
Oliver is an active campaigner and has a track-record of standing up for people and demanding better for residents. His campaign priorities are fixing the NHS, tackling climate change, and making sure local services are properly-funded.
